Rudolph Carl Gorman [1931-2005] was born and raised on the Navajo reservation in Chinle, Arizona and it is known that he attended schools in Arizona, California, and Mexico City, but he preferred simply to say, "I'm self-taught." He was influenced by Mexican social realist artists. He worked in painting, sculpture, ceramics, and stone lithography. Women predominate in Gorman?s drawings and lithos. In that regard he stated, "women are a constant challenge, because their infinite variety invites an even greater infinity of interpretations. I have a preference for the ample woman. Her figure occupies space softly, with a kind of monumental fullness.".
