First edition. 255 pages + 1 of ads. Author's copy, inscribed in blue ink to the front endpaper: "23rd book. Margery Lawrence Published May. 1953". The book is bound in hard-wearing dark blue cloth with matching blue top-stain to the text block and a brown faux leather spine label, lettered and decorated in gilt. The binding is firm, the cloth is lightly rubbed and marked, the spine a little faded and the title label chipped. The text block is slightly foxed, marked and age toned. A novel about a young cockney waitress's adventures in India, after she is plucked from her Lyons' tea-shop obscurity by a visiting prince, set shortly after the war, between 1945 and the end of British rule in 1948.
