First edition, first printing, a superb presentation copy linking two of the great dynasties of global finance, with a printed presentation slip to the pastedown of the first volume with handwritten additions: "This book is presented to Baron Lionel de Rothschild with the Compliments of Paul M. Warburg", and a similar printed presentation slip in the second volume. A leading member of the international banking family, Rothschild (1882-1942) served as Conservative MP for Aylesbury from 1910 to 1922. In 1917, he co-founded and headed the anti-Zionist League of British Jews, and he served as President of the Jewish War Memorial Council from 1919 until his death. He purchased the Exbury estate in Hampshire in 1919; the volumes are among books recently deaccessioned from the Exbury library. Paul Warburg (1868-1932), an Jewish-American banker born in Germany, was a firm advocate of the US Federal Reserve System, this being his magnum opus, his most detailed and extensive study of the nascent system. In the early 1900s, he had pushed for the establishment of a central bank and had been present at the secret meeting on Jekyll Island, Georgia that formed the Aldrich Plan, which, though rejected by Congress, laid the foundation for the 1913 Federal Reserve Act. Woodrow Wilson appointed him to the reserve's new board in 1914, which he remained on until 1918, thereafter serving on its advisory council. Larson 1909. Two vols, quarto. Original blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt. With 5 facsimiles and 2 diagrams. A few specks of soiling and residue to cloth, small chip to vol. II pp. 889-890 affecting a few letters, else a fine copy, cloth bright and square. Seller Inventory # 177810
