First edition, a beautifully illustrated manual for painting quintessential British flowers. Everard's instructions focus on the mixing and use of colour, and are exemplified in the delicately hand-coloured plates. Although the book was published in London, most names on the subscriber list are of women from Everard's local area, perhaps suggesting community awareness and support for the project. Everard was born in 1803. Little is known of her until she established a school for young women in partnership with a Miss Elizabeth Taylor, in Bawtry, South Yorkshire, which closed in 1831. She published Flowers from Nature in an interim before she opened another school, this time taking boarders, in 1836. Her career as a teacher ended when she married a chemist named John D. Mackinder in 1844, whose first wife had died; the first Mrs J. D. Mackinder appears on the present list of subscribers. Flowers from Nature is more commonly found in a publisher's plain maroon cloth, rather than the present more elaborate binding. Folio (370 x 274 mm), pp. 13. Lithographic frontispiece and 12 similar plates, entirely hand-coloured, with tissue guards. Contemporary brown pebble-grain cloth with embossed foliate pattern, rebacked in calf and relined, spine with five raised bands, gilt floral ornaments and red morocco label, title to front cover in gilt, edges gilt. Edges worn, sides damp-stained with a few ink spots, contents occasionally foxed, colour plates bright and vivid. A very good copy.
