First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "For Adele Sullivan - keep up the good work - and best wishes from - Roy Cohn". The recipient has dated the inscription underneath 5 June 1973. The recipient is almost certainly Adele Woodhouse Erb Sullivan (1907-1999), 26th President General of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a conservative patriotic organization. The Daughters of the American Revolution had enthusiastically supported the investigations of the House Committee on Un-American Activities, during which Cohn served as chief counsel to Senator McCarthy. They virulently opposed communism throughout the 1950s and afterwards. In the 1960s, Sullivan made a high-profile trip to Vietnam with General William Westmoreland, which stirred the passions of the pro-war elements in American society and led to a large increase in membership of Sullivan's organization. Roy Cohn's career was marked with controversy. He gained a reputation as a fixer who kept ethics separate from legal battles - he later served as lawyer and mentor to the young Donald Trump and represented New York mob bosses. In 1964 and 1969, indictments were brought against him by federal grand juries in New York. He was acquitted each time. In A Fool for a Client, Cohn contends the indictments were only harassment and recommends the abolition of the grand jury system and curtailment of the use of the conspiracy statute. Octavo.
