With the remembrances of one of the Balcombes and all good wishes. Mabel Brookes 1960' and on half-title in another hand: 'To Bill Latey With good wishes and as a token of the pleasure I have had from knowing him from Mabel 20.5.60'. Inserted onto the reverse of the front endpaper are two pages of notes taken during an interview with Dame Mabel Brookes at the Albany on Aug. 1/62. The story of Napoleon and Betsy Balcombe, told by a descendant of the Balcombe family, who were hosts to Napoleon during his exile on the island of St Helena. Coloured portrait frontispiece. 28pp. illustrations. Endpaper map/illustration. Dust jacket is price clipped and a little rubbed at extremities. The jacket's head of the spine appears to have been reinforced with a strip of paper on the reverse not visible from the outside. Some gentle crushing to the tail and head of the boards at the spine.
