First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on a publisher's label laid down on the front free endpaper, "to Thomas, I hope you like book four as much as the others! With best wishes, JKRowling". The recipient was Thomas New, who wrote one of the six fan letters reproduced in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (see Errington, p. 66). Thomas New, signing himself aged 10, noted that "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the best book I have ever read". Rowling responded to the fan letter on 11 April 1998 and later inscribed a copy of Chamber of Secrets to Thomas, including an apology about "You-Know-Who having your name". That copy and letter sold at auction in December 2002. First published on 8 July 2000 in the UK and US, the fourth novel in the series was the first to receive significant media attention and a release at midnight. Errington A9(a). Octavo. Original matt laminated printed boards, spine and front cover lettered in dark blue, light blue, red, and black. With dust jacket.
