About this Item
First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, "To James Nelson Sr. with friendship and gratitude, Buckminster Fuller". The recipient was likely Dr James B. Nelson, a scholar of Christian ethics and an active champion of civil and LGBT rights. Nelson was ordained as clergy in the United Church of Christ. In 1977, Nelson found himself in the national spotlight with the publication of "Homosexuality and the Church" in Christianity and Crisis, in which he made a case for the full acceptance of LGBT persons into the church. He continued to advocate for sexual education and acceptance and argued for a fresh understanding of sexual sin as the "dualistic alienation by which females are kept from claiming their assertiveness and males kept from claiming their vulnerability". His work on human sexuality and ethics helped "set the stage for a United Church ready to become open and affirming", said John Dorhauer, the UCC's president (quoted by Larkman). In Ideas and Integrities, Fuller describes the revolutionary designs and concepts he has pioneered, including the geodesic dome, the Dymaxion world map, 4-D house, and 4-D automobile. He sets forth ideas for the world of the future, ideas which inspired the work of USCO and Stewart Brand. Connie Larkmen, obituary for James Nelson in Christian Century, 11 Nov. 2025; James Nelson, "Reuniting Sexuality and Spirituality", Christian Century, 25 Feb. 1987, pp. 187-90. Octavo. With 32 pp. of black and white photographic illustrations. Original yellow cloth, spine lettered in black, geodesic design in blind on front cover, black endpapers. With dust jacket.
