Fifth printing, inscribed by the 32nd President on the front free endpaper, "For Rudolph Foster with a Merry Christmas from his old friend Franklin D. Roosevelt". Foster (1872-1943) worked as assistant for eight Presidents from McKinley to Roosevelt. Upon Foster's death in 1943, Roosevelt stated "My friendship with him went back to the administration of Theodore Roosevelt. It was continued even more closely during the Wilson administration; and when I returned to Washington on March 4, 1933, it was a great help and a happy thing to find an old and true friend still at the head of the White House offices". He had previously said, "In the smooth handling of [White House] vital tasks, one man has been supreme through eight presidencies. Chief executives of many temperaments and methods have come and gone. To Rudolph Foster has fallen the task and the opportunity of maintaining the successful continuity of the work through all these years" (Evening Star, 7 July 1943). Published to coincide with Roosevelt's inauguration, Looking Forward was drawn from his papers and addresses and served as a manifesto of his ideas and policies. The fifth printing of November 1933 followed the first of March. Halter T551. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Bookplate of recipient's son, the Washington banker Warren R. Forster, to front pastedown. Spine and extremities sunned and a little rubbed. A very good copy. Seller Inventory # 187337
