A look at the socio-economic effects of the coal mining industry to the traditionally agrarian Appalachian region. Author Malcolm Ross ( 1895-1965) writes soon after the Great Depression, and argues that technological changes which displace labor have unforeseen societal consequences, shining a spotlight on the "near-slavery conditions of the coal mining industry." Originally a journalist, Ross would work as the Public Relations Director of the National Labor Relations Board the year after this publication of his first book. He was appointed Chairman of the Fair Employment Practices Committee by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1943.
