Jennings was the literary editor and leader writer of the Daily Mirror between 1904 and 1942. Mandrake Over the Water-Carrier, the author's third novel, is a symbolic and semi autobiographical tale of a group of people living on the Channel Islands. Edward Sackville-West (1901-1965), a cousin of Vita, was a music critic as well as a novelist. He had a wide range of literary associates, including several members of the Bloomsbury Group. In his review of Mandrake Over the Water-Carrier novel, L.P. Hartley described Sackville-West as "one of the most interesting of the younger novelists" (Saturday Review, p. 842). L. P. Hartley, "New Fiction", Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art, 30 June 1928. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket by Ralph Keene. Extremities a little rubbed and bumped, edges and outer leaves faintly foxed; jacket spine and peripheries toned and foxed, shallow loss to spine ends, edges slightly creased with occasional small chips: a very good copy in like jacket.
