About this Item
First edition, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "To Miss Vera Mulholland, with the author's compliments, London 3 December 1926, Ettie A. Rout". This book reports on the diets of the native peoples of parts of Africa, South America and the Pacific, including chapters on "pot herbs, salads, and beers", "steaming and preserving", and "fern-root and cassava". Ettie A. Rout (1877-1936) was a Tasmania-born author on multiple health-related subjects, including marriage and prophylactics. Her work at the Somme, France, during the First World War combating venereal disease among servicemen earned her recognition in France but severe condemnation in New Zealand, and on the publication of her 1922 book Safe Marriage: A Return to Sanity a British bishop called her "the wickedest woman in Britain" (ODNB). Native Diet was written at the instigation of the New Health Society. Octavo. Lithographic portrait frontispiece, 5 plates. Original black boards, printed paper labels to spine and front board, black endpapers. Extremities lightly rubbed, spine label a little faded, faint mark from a removed label to front board, pale foxing to edges, contents clean. A very good copy.
