First edition, association copy, inscribed by a secretary on behalf of Gustave Tuck, the president and main financial backer of the Jewish Historical Society of England, to Herbert Loewe, a member of its council. This history centres on the provision of a permanent base for the society at University College London. Loewe (1882-1940) was a Cambridge-educated linguist and, from 1931, the university's reader in Rabbinics. Tuck's inscription is on the front pastedown. In Tuck's later years, his inscriptions were usually written by a secretary. It is possible the "Herbert Loewe" of the inscription here is in Tuck's hand. Octavo. Half-tone frontispiece and 10 plates. Original presentation binding of dark red diagonal-grain cloth, front cover lettered and framed in gilt, publisher's gilt device on rear cover. Spine and part of rear cover sunned, a few marks, cords slightly loose but volume holding perfectly firm: very good.
