8vo, pp. [viii], 80; new half calf over marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt. First edition of this selection. The poems in this slim volume are entirely different from those published by Mallet in 1743, with the same title; two of them had already appeared separately, both in 1760, a poem on the death of Lady Anson, and Edwin and Emma, printed in Birmingham by Baskerville. A poem called Tyburn, addressed to the Marine Society, was composed in 1762. Foxon p. 442. ESTC calls for a plate, but this seems a very suspicious requirement: the copy reproduced on ECCO (from the BL) does not have it, nor do both copies digitised by Hathi Trust (one of them being Viscount Nuneham's copy, at Penn State); and no plate is mentioned in the catalogue records for either the Yale copy (uncut in original wrappers) or that at Harvard (a presentation copy from the author). There must somewhere be a copy with a frontispiece, but it may well be an unrelated plate from elsewhere. Provenance. Stamp on the title of G. [or possibly C.] Buck, dated 1769.
