Nathan, Robert. PORTRAIT OF JENNIE. New York: Knopf, 1940. FIRST EDITION, true first issue. An exceedingly FINE copy (virtually no wear to the fragile woven cloth) in a fresh NEAR FINE TO FINE priced dust jacket which has only trifling wear and retains the full red color of the lettering on both the spine panel and front panel. One of a small number of publisher's pre-publication copies with a special printed fly-leaf (usually blank) "This first edition of The Portrait of Jennie by Robert Nathan which appeared serially in Fall 1939 issues is presented to you with the compliments of Redbook magazine." This is only the second true first issue copy we've ever seen. PORTRAIT OF JENNIE tells the story of a struggling depression-era painter whose muse is a young girl from the past, a girl who grows into womanhood at a rate in defiance of all laws of time and space each time he encounters her. The 1949 film of the novel, starring Joseph Cotton & Jennifer Jones with equally touching performances, has been lauded as both magical and unforgettable by those who love the movie.
