First edition. Large quarto. Unpaginated. 25 x 37 cm. Hessian-backed marbled boards. number 134 of 200 numbered copies, signed by the artist in ink under the limitation. Eighteen black and white plates by Julian Trevelyan. Commentary opposite each plate & two page introduction by Kathleen Raine. Printed by Daedalus Press, Stoke Ferry. Fine in very good, slightly nicked and rubbed dustwrapper, designed by Julian Trevelyan (with longish closed tear at head of front panel). Trevelyan RA (1910-88) was an English artist and poet who worked alongside artists including Max Ernst, Oskar Kokoschka, Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso. From 1955 to 1963, Trevelyan worked at the Royal College of Art and became Head of the Etching Department. Because of his enthusiasm in his work and the desire to share it with others, Trevelyan became a highly influential teacher, with students including David Hockney, Ron Kitaj and Norman Ackroyd. He was an important leader of modern print techniques and today is regarded as a silent driving force behind the etching revolution of the 1960s. Seller Inventory # 5254

Rigby Graham's copy, with his ownership signature inked to the front free endpaper. Folio. Unpaginated. This copy specially bound [by Trevor Hickman] in green cloth with colour marbled sides, lettered in gold at the spine. With a frontispiece, and seventeen full-page black and white plates, with Raine's commentary to each adjacent verso. In fine state. No dust wrapper. Graham arranged for all his personal favourite books to be specially bound by his friend and occasional collaborator - the author, publisher, bookbinder and Leicestershire scholar Trevor Hickman. This book was originally issued with a dust wrapper, but Graham appears to have abandoned those to better show-off his friend's bookbinding excellence, although the illustration from the front panel of the wrapper has been tipped to a preliminary leaf.
