About this Item

First edition, inscribed by the 30th President on the front free endpaper, "To Stuart W. Jackson with regards Calvin Coolidge". The bookplate of the recipient, Lafayette and Lincoln scholar Stuart Wells Jackson (1875-1957), is on the front pastedown, beneath his pencilled note, "Inscribed by the President on the day he was nominated at Cleveland June 1924, SWJ". Mounted to the rear pastedown is a typed letter signed from Coolidge's secretary to Jackson, 31 March 1931, stating that the chapter "The Place of Lincoln" has never been reprinted. The Price of Freedom collects speeches articulating Coolidge's principles ahead of his presidential campaign. Nominated by the Republican Convention of 10-12 June 1924, he won the election that November. Under his two terms, his low-tax, laissez-faire policies helped fuel the Roaring Twenties. Octavo. Half-tone portrait frontispiece. Original blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. Minor bumps and nicks at extremities: a very good copy.
