First Edition of the book that collects Kipling's poem "If" for the first time. Octavo. pp. xii, 288. With four plates by Frank Craig. Rebound by Zaehnsdorf in full scarlet crushed Morocco, binding signed as a prized binding, with five raised bands to the spine and gilt title lettering alongside snowflake ornaments. On the front cover is the handsome armourial emblem of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. All edges coasted in gilt leaf. Half-title present, titlepage printed in red and black. A few scattered foxing spots to endpapers and sporadically through text. An extremely handsome copy in a plutocratic library binding. Kipling wrote the poem in 1895 as a tribute to Leander Starr Jameson, following his failed raid against the Boers. It was published in England just a few days after first appearing in the October 1910 issue of the 'American Magazine'. It was an instant hit and has remained Kipling's most enduring poem. the book that collects Kipling's poem "If" for the first time. Octavo. pp. xii, 288. With four plates by Frank Craig.
