First edition, first impression, pre-publication presentation copy, inscribed by Trevelyan on the front free endpaper, to the Canadian artist Elizabeth Muntz: "'E.M.' Betty, from R.C.T. 21 April 1932". The edition, printed in a run of 400 copies, was not published until May. Muntz (1894-1977) was a sculptor, member of the Seven and Five artists society, and dedicatee of Trevelyan's 1925 work Idylls of Theocritus. It was in 1925 that Muntz moved to the village of Chaldon Herring, Dorset, with her sister, the medievalist and author Isabelle Hope Muntz, buying a cottage in 1932. Chaldon Herring was then an artistic and literary hub for those associated with the Bloomsbury group, being home to Trevelyan's close friend Theodore Powys, David Garnett, and Sylvia Townsend Warner. Muntz completed a bronze bust of Trevelyan, which is housed in the Dorset Museum and Art Gallery. Her family, descended from the political reformer George Frederick Muntz, also includes the Impressionist painter Laura Muntz Lyell. Woolmer 311. Octavo. Original marbled paper boards, paper title label to spine and front board. Light wear to extremities with small loss to head of spine, small split to upper front joint, the binding otherwise unfaded and sound, very occasionall faint foxing to contents, else clean and unmarked; a very good copy.
