A bound volume of pamphlets, 2 alluding to current affairs, belonging to Sir Stafford Northcote, one of them inscribed to him by the writer Augustus Brackenbury. Northcote was a prominent late nineteenthcenturypolitician who spent nine years as Tory leader in the House of Commons from 1876 to 1885, almost a forgotten Tory leader in spite of the colossal statue of him in the Central Lobby of the House of Commons, seen by hundreds of visitors every day. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION Three pamphlets, bound together in one volume in a half binding of tan calf over marbled boards. In very good condition, calf a little worn to corners and spine. Titles within embossed in gilt to spine panel. End papers clean, a little foxed. Front pastedown is signed by 'Sir S N Northcote 1871'. Front free end paper and flyleaf, both blind stamped 'HS Eland, Late Clifford, Bookseller & co. Exeter'. Three pamphlets within comprise: Henry William Pullen's anonymously published allegory about the Franco-Prussian war 'The Fight at Dame Europa's School'. 1871 First Edition. Francis B Felt & Co.
