First edition, first printing, inscribed by the photographer on the half-title, "Nour et Gilles, merci pour tout et toutes mes amitiés, S. Salgado" ("Nour and Gilles, thanks for everything, and all my friendship, S. Salgado"). Salgado began documenting the drought and famine-stricken Sahel region of Africa in 1984, working with the humanitarian organization Médecins sans Frontières to document the suffering and dignity of the refugees. This early work was a template for his future photographic projects. Large quarto. Black and white photographic illustrations throughout. Text in French. Original coated black wrappers lettered in white and grey, photographic illustration on front wrapper, black endpapers. Upper corners bumped, extremities a touch rubbed, a very good copy indeed.
