A fine selection of letters, hand written by John Braine and wife Janet Barber on headed paper. With a collection of ephemera and clippings. The letters hand written by Braine are in black ink and addressed to Anne and Royston Millmore, good friends and correspondents of Braine. The first letter, dated 27th April 1983, reflects on "the weekend" and recalls good memories and good friendship, showing a sentimental side to Braine, ending "Love to you both- John". The second letter, on headed paper, is dated 20th March 1984 and again recalls a "happy weekend", again ending "Love to you both from us both- John". The third letter, on Janet Barber's headed paper, is again addressed to the Millmores, again in thanks for hospitality and "such delicious food", signed "Yours, Janet". The fourth letter, addressed just to Ann, to "Note new addresses" and in John's handwriting, signed "Janet and John" on two sides of headed paper. The penultimate letter, dated 19th November, is on Janet's headed paper, on a half piece of A4. Janet mentions the "kind and sympathetic" treatment from the Millmores, following the death of her husband John Braine. The letter is signed just Janet. The final letter is from Janet Barber, thanking the recipients for "the description of John's memorial service", which she missed presumably due to grief. The final paragraph of side one reads as follows: "John has left a most sad and empty gap- all the warmth and friendship and generous love he so freely offered was a rare thing, and a privilege to receive, and endless joy". Among the various ephemera and newspaper clippings, is a short note on The Cats Protection League, again noting "how splendid Royston's tribute to John was". Overall, this is a fine selection of letters in the hands of John and Janet Braine, capturing a tender moment of grief at the passing of the great twentieth century author.
