First edition, first printing, presentation copy to former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, from Shunichi Suzuki (1910-2010), governor of Tokyo from 1979 to 1995. A printed presentation page opens the book, signed by Suzuki at foot and inscribed at head, "The Rt. Hon. Margaret H. Thatcher O.M. F.R.S. M.P.", reading: "I am pleased and proud, as a representative of the 12 million citizens of this metropolis, to welcome you to Tokyo. Please accept this album of photographs as a small token of our welcome to you. I hope that it will serve to remind you of the time you spent with us". Thatcher was presented with the book during her visit to Japan in early September 1991, where she made three public speeches. Suzuki also presented her with a ceremonial key to Tokyo, in a box dated 5 September 1991 (sold at Christie's, 8 May 2019, lot 102). The book remained in the possession of Thatcher until her death, afterwards dispersed in her first estate sale at Christie's in 2015. Her posthumous bookplate is mounted to the front pastedown. Folio. With colour photograph illustrations throughout, some folding. Original quarter brown leatherette, cloth sides, textured paper endpapers.
