First edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "For Helen and Guy Pawson, with love and best wishes, Iris". Murdoch's seventh novel is an "allegorical and atmospheric Gothic romance, concerning her theme that life might be a spiritual quest or pilgrimage" (ODNB). Several articles from newspapers and journals concerning Murdoch are loosely inserted, all dated from the late 1990s. These include reviews for her last book, Jackson's Dilemma, from the New York Times and the Sunday Times, and "Elegy for Iris: Scenes from an Indomitable Marriage" by her husband John Bayley, from the New Yorker. Helen and Guy Pawson lived in Sudan for many years, where Guy was a colonial administrator. Guy had also played a few matches of first-class cricket whilst at Oxford University, and the couple's son Tony became a cricket correspondent for the Observer. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine in gilt, top edge blue. With supplied dust jacket designed by Christopher Cornford. Spine ends a little sunned, a couple of faint marks to the covers; jacket unclipped, spine toned and nicked at head, a little damp-staining to rear panel: a very good copy in like jacket.
