First edition, first printing, presentation copy from Jackie Kennedy to her step-brother, inscribed on the half-title "For Yusha with all love Jackie Christmas 1981". The recipient was Hugh D. Auchincloss III (1927-2015), nicknamed Yusha, the son of the second husband of Jackie's mother Janet Lee. The Auchincloss's were a wealthy family that made their fortune in oil and finance, and continue to have a prominent role in American politics. Hugh was 14 when his father married Jackie's mother and he and 12-year-old Jackie became close friends, spending summers together at Hammersmith Farm. The two corresponded throughout their lives up until Jackie's death in 1994. The book gathers Turbeville's photographs of the parts of Versailles off limits to the public. Another member of the Auchincloss dynasty, the novelist and historian Louis (1917-2010), contributes the introduction. "Together photographer and writer have created a unique artistic and historical document which illuminates the excesses and heartbreak of the monarchs, courtiers, and servants whose spirits linger in what is perhaps the greatest political edifice ever built by man" (jacket). Quarto. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. A fine copy in worn and sunned jacket. Seller Inventory # 160976
