A surreal conversation with a man wearing a long black leather coat in a subway, late one night, causes Christopher Ward to learn of the existence of such a secret. But he is led on an exasperating trail of vague allusions and maddening dead ends, which nearly causes his death, in his decision to follow the white rabbit down the hole. Dr Anna Mitchell is a 'good girl', who has never once been allowed to stray from the path of achieving career success, a good solid marriage and a suburban life with white picket fences. But the stifling rigidity of this course makes her realise that she wants to change her life, and she begins to search for an identity and purpose that permits her silent feelings of alienation from society to be released. Tentatively exploring her inexplicable attraction to her inner darkness, she starts on her journey to become a Goth, and is completely unprepared for the ferocity of the backlash.
