About this Item
First edition, presentation copy, inscribed to "William H. Chappell Esq, with cordial regards, Henry Clews, N.Y. Apl 30, 1901" in black ink on the front free endpaper. Wall Street covers such pressing contemporary issues as panics, trusts, anti-trust law, anarchism, and labour unions. The flamboyant, British-born Henry Clews (1834-1923) opened an office on Wall Street in 1858. Apart from his work as a note broker and private banker, he published a weekly pamphlet "which for years was widely known as the authoritative interpretation and forecast of market conditions" (Ingham, p.172). Dennistoun & Goodman 620. John H. Ingham, Biographical Dictionary of American Business Leaders, vol I, 1983. Octavo. Photogravure portrait frontispiece of the author, with tissue guard. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover lettered and ruled in yellow and green and with coloured pictorial block of Trinity Church against the Manhattan skyline, rear cover with publisher's device blind-stamped to centre. Light bumping, rubbing, and damp staining, head of spine just lifting but holding firm, remnants of adhesive to pastedowns, minimal staining to edges, small chip to outer margin of pp. 19-20, contents otherwise fresh and crisp: a good copy indeed.
