First edition, first impression, inscribed by both authors on the title page "Helga & Michael - Blessed Be Jan Farrar Stewart Farrar". This is a beautiful copy, uncommonly found signed, of this key text in modern paganism. Stewart and Janet Farrar stand alongside Doreen Valiente, Gerald Gardner, and Patricia Crowther as leading proponents of modern Wicca having written "some of the most influential books on modern Witchcraft to date" (The Encyclopedia of Modern Witchcraft and Neo-Paganism). Janet was initiated into Alexandrian Wicca by the tradition's founders, Alex and Maxine Sanders in 1970. She met Stewart in the coven and began running their own coven in 1971, before their third degree initiation ceremony. The Farrars have written many wide-reaching books on modern witchcraft and "their form of Wicca has become the 'standard' by which others are measured" (Wheeler III). Robert Hale was a favourite publisher of pagan revivalist works, including this work and the Farrar's The Witches' God (1989).
