A 23-line Typed Letter Signed (with some hand-written alterations and notes/comments) re Shardik. Dated 30th April 1973 from 26, St. Paul's Place, Canonbury, LONDON, N.1. addressed to the author's publisher "Rex Collings" at Messrs Coltart and Collings, Publishers, 6 Paddington Street, London. W,1.M 3LA.: Dear Rex, 'Shardik' You will remember that we discussed together the problem that arises in connection with the necessity for a re-type of virtually the whole of 'Shardik'. I have been looking into the economics of this, and am pleased to find that they are not quite as grizzly as I thought they were. Through the Authors Society I have found a very good type of woman resident at Barnet, and she now has the first "Book" of 'Shardik' for retyping. This runs out at 130 sides of foolscap double space, and she tells me that her charge will be round about £10. Pro rata, this would mean that a complete re-type of the book would cost between £50 and £60 - admissible for income tax relief. (Incidentally, the closing part of the book needs much less correction than the earlier part, so it's possible that we may not need to have the whole thing retyped). I think that we could probably afford to think realistically in terms of about £50. If you can help with this at all, on the lines we discussed, I'm sure I'll be very grateful. Incidentally, now that I've got beyond the first 100 pages and well into the task of revision, I think I can tell you, guardedly, in confidence, that I don't think people are going to find much wrong with 'Shardik'. I was crying my own eyes out last night! Yours ever Richard. The hand-written amendments in Adams' hand are: He has circled the word "grizzly" and added the comment "This is an intentional joke by Mrs Bolton!" In the last sentence he has added a * to the word 'Shardik' and commented: * Oo, I wish I hadn't said that. Hope the gods didn't hear".
