Certificate: 15-3/4" x 9-3/4" This original 1864 Civil War parchment appointment is for John Hoover First Lieutenant of the 23rd Regiment Of Colored Troops. The certificate is signed by C. W. Foster, Assistant Adjutant General Volunteers & Charles Anderson Dana, Assistant Secretary of War. The certificate comes with 3 cdv photos (one in uniform)of Hoover and one tintype. One CDV with annotation to verso: "Jno Hoover / Capt. N.Y. Vols / 94th Regt." "The 23rd United States Colored Troops, also known as the 23rd United States Colored Infantry, played a significant role in the American Civil War. They were organized at Camp Casey, Virginia, beginning November 23, 1863, and served until June 30, 1864. The regiment was part of the Ninth Corps and was involved in several key battles, including the famous battle of Spotsylvania, where they faced General Robert E. Lee's Army. The regiment was composed of free men and ex-slaves from various counties, including Virginia, Stafford, Spotsylvania, Orange, Culpeper, and Caroline, as well as the city of Fredericksburg. They were initially allowed to serve as contrabands but later became soldiers in the Union army. The regiment's service was crucial in bolstering the Union war effort and contributed to the eventual Union victory." [American Battlefield Trust]. Age-toning to certificate with fold-lines.
