Second, revised edition. Presentation copy from the author to the library of the Royal Institution of South Wales, with their presentation bookplate reading "Presented to the Library by W. S. Jevons Esq. the Author May 23 A.D. 1871", and with the inscription on verso of front free endpaper "from the author", the latter in Jevons's hand. The Coal Question, the book that made Jevons's reputation, was first published the previous year. The work explores Britain's reliance on coal, and questions the sustainability of basing the nation's supremacy on a finite resource. Its considerations of the limits of growth and sustainability has ensured it has retained its interest and relevance to this day. Octavo. Frontispiece chart of coal consumption. Original ribbed red-brown cloth, blindstamp rule border to covers, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, black coated endpapers. Library stamps to a few pages. Expertly refurbished with joints and extremities repaired. Spine a little darkened and a few minor marks to cloth, light foxing to initial and final leaves. A very good copy.
