The first line of the text reads, ''The nearest I have ever come to believing in a hero was when in high school.'' Tom Dooley, the hero in question, was a highly respected doctor in the U.S. Navy from which he resigned in 1956 following allegations of homosexuality. He spent the rest of his life engaged in charitable activities in Vietnam and Laos. After his untimely death in 1961 unsuccessful moves were made to bring about his sanctification.Fold creases.
