About this Item

Description:

A handsomely bound copy, with a signed portrait of Lee, inscribed "Vernon Lee, June 1903" mounted on the verso of the first blank. Vernon Lee (Violet Paget, 1856-1935) wrote several studies as an art historian under this pseudonym before turning to fiction. Her biographer Peter Gunn writes that he "can only define her by saying that she is an essayist who is at once an aesthete, a psychologist and an historian" (p. 219). This collection of essays was first published in two volumes in 1884. This was a year of extreme productivity for Lee, when three of her works, including Euphorian, were published. The other two works were The Countess of Albany (a biography of Princess Louise of Stolberg) and Miss Brown (her first novel). Euphorion and The Countess of Albany are "still considered among Vernon Lee's finest [works]" (ODNB). Peter Gunn, Vernon Lee: Violet Paget, 1856-1935, 1964. Octavo (215 x 142 mm). Mounted frontispiece after John Singer Sargent. Bound in full green morocco, dated 1906, spine with raised bands, lettered and tooled in compartments in gilt, covers stamped in gilt with double ruled frame, floral frame to covers tooled in gilt with red morocco onlay details, board edges and turn-ins ruled in gilt, binder's initials "L. U." in gilt to rear turn-in, edges gilt, a few pages untrimmed. A few spots of rubbing, wear to one corner, offsetting to title page; a near-fine copy. Seller Inventory # 179966
