Signed R.Smith, dated 2/3/49. 18 x 13cm. Original pencil cartoons on the subject of the police, and on the hastily enlarged band of 'Specials' sworn in to deal with the Chartists and other radical protesters, c.1848-49, each with ink caption. They convey well the low esteem in which the force was held. Benezit lists two possible candidates for 'R. Smith': Richard, who exhibited 1837-55 or, more likely, Robert, a Dublin amateur artist, 1792-1882. PLEASE NOTE: For customers within the UK this item is subject to VAT at 20%.
