5 printed lines completed in ink, 'Captain Peard R.N., Bicton, 1832, (signed) Rolle' and with the official wax stamp of Baron Rolle. Written in pencil on verso is: 'my grandfather. Helen C. Peard'. Signed and stamped by John Rolle, 1st Baron Rolle, granting 'permission to fish with a rod and line during this season from February to August on that part of the river Otter only which is above Otterton Wear all below being reserved'. This section of the river Otter, in Devon, fell within the boundaries of the Bicton Estate which had belonged to the Rolle family since 1613. George Peard, a celebrated Naval Captain of Exminster, Devon, was the father of the novelist Frances Mary Peard. PLEASE NOTE: For customers within the UK this item is subject to VAT at 20%.
