Folio, unpaginated, 6ll. prelims & preface, 170ll. text & appendix, the first half signed in 4s, then 2s; light marginal soiling but generally well preserved with good margins; later panelled calf worn, sides detached, backstrip largely absent. The magnum opus of the Cambridge Professor of Civil Law, 1594, and Master of Trinity, 1598. Prosecuted for exalting the King's Prerogative before the House of Commons by Sir Edward Coke, who had a hostile history with Cowell. He was saved from imprisonment by the interposition of James I but his book was burnt by order of the House. Several times reprinted & enlarged until 1727.

Visitors are welcome but we open by appointment only except on Book & Artisan Market Saturdays (the second Saturday each month from Easter to Christmas) when the book rooms are open to all from 10am to 1pm. We also issue printed catalogues & regular email lists of new acquisitions, specialising in Printing & the Art of the Book, Wood-engraving, Bookplates, & General Antiquarian. …
