The magnum opus of the Cambridge Professor of Civil Law, 1594, and Master of Trinity, 1598. Prosecuted for exalting the King's Prerogative before the House of Commons by Sir Edward Coke, who had a hostile history with Cowell. He was saved from imprisonment by the interposition of James I but his book was burnt by order of the House. Several times reprinted & enlarged until 1727.
