[French Erotica] FINELY BOUND LIMITED EDITION. Two volumes uniformly bound. Octavo (24 x 18cm), pp.XIII [1] 265 [5], pp.[12] 266 [6]. Full turquoise morocco with embossed silhouettes and gilt tooling to boards, gilt lettering to spine. Both volumes housed inside a blue cloth slipcase. Green endpapers made from 'Universal Arena' imitating moire silk, the details of which are outlined in the binder's letter. Untrimmed edges. Twenty-six illustrated plates throughout including frontispieces, both volumes with an illustrated half-title page lettered in gilt. Decorative grey borders around text. Book binder's letter, binder's invoice, and an original spine loosely inserted to vol I. This copy is number 218 in a limited print run of 890 as stated on the limitation page. With specially commissioned book plates for noted collector Gordon P. Smith signed and numbered by the artist in pencil. Sunning to spines, bumping to upper right corner of slipcase, small pink mark to side of slipcase. Very good. Les Liaisons dangereuses is a French epistolary novel which was first published in 1782. The bespoke bookplate was Gordon P. Smith's; he was a noted collector of erotic bookplates and was referenced in the Dee MacDonald's 'Purple Pillow Book' (2003).
