A fine copy in publisher's black cloth and fine unclipped dustjacket, signed and dated on the title-page. 630pp. Randburg, Macdonald Purnell, As fine a copy of Nelson Mandela's landmark autobiography as one could wish for: barely opened, never read. This copy is signed on the title-page: "Mandela 19. 2. 96"   The anti-apartheid activist was repeatedly arrested for treason and sedition, before being sentenced to a twenty-seven year jail sentence for conspiracy to overthrow the state in 1962.   On his release, Mandela led the ANC to victory in the 1994 election, when became the first president of South Africa, and first Black head of state. He stepped down in 1999 at the completion of his first term.   His autobiography was an immense success, selling over six million copies world wide. Signed copies in this condition are particularly rare and desirable.   This copy belonged to Ian Woodall who led the first South African expedition to Everest in 1996.
