[Illustrated American Literature] DELUXE ILLUSTRATED EDITION, with ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR. Small quarto (22 x 17cm), pp.[2] 208. With 35 illustrated plates by Copping, including a frontispiece, vignette title page, and a total of 24 in colour. An ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR illustration signed by Copping to the fly-leaf, depicting a shepherdess. Publisher's deluxe full vellum, with gilt titles and decoration to spine and upper. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Some spotting to deckle edges, and a very slight reading lean, otherwise a lovely crisp, clean copy. One silk tie detached, but still present; the other remains fully intact. Vellum remains clean and bright with minimal bowing, toning, marks etc. Near fine. A unique copy of this popular Southern American novel set in the slums of Louisville, Kentucky.
