This noted painter, collage artist and commercial illustrator is known for his many postage stamps, film posters, magazine covers and gallery designs; "Collier's" and "The Saturday Evening Post" often featured his work starting in the 1940s. Signed FDC, 6½" X 3½", cancelled in Petersburg, IL on 22 August 1970 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Single 6-cent "Edgar Lee Masters American Poet" stamp designed by Ortnes at upper right. Near fine. At lower left, Ortnes signs large and bold in brown fineline. With portion of the original transmittal envelope, cancelled in West Redding, CT on 26 August 1970. Unusual. Seller Inventory # 48061
