Green buckram over bevelled boards, paper spine-label, contents printed in blue, black and red, 8vo, 27 cm, 96 pp, 2 folding plates, ills, facs. [Title-page within ornamental border is folded and mounted on guard; text within ornamental border. "This book was compiled and was for the most part written by Francis Meynell the typographer of the Pelican Press" - Colophon. The prospectus states that "This book has been edited, printed and published by the Pelican Press, which offers it as an example of its finest work. . It has been written with the single aim of increasing the appreciation of good printing : of making informed buyers of printing : and so of winning attention for the finer points of 'the art' as it is practised at the Pelican Press and by the three or four other first-class printers in this country. It does not make the mistake of assuming that the user of printing is ever likely to wish to print for himself ; therefore it spares him a description of the technique of production. " Typography," on the other hand, concentrates on giving the non-printer a technical apparatus of criticism, by which he may distinguish the good from the bad, and in all the minutiae of printing learn accurately to appraise the quality." Appleton (Bibliography of Stanley Morison, item 19) notes that "some copies were bound in blue paper boards" as is ours here: the standard issue (as envisaged by the prospectus) was buckram. Appleton states that there were 500 copies of this first edition, the prospectus envisaged 750. Ruari McLean described the book Appleton commented: "This book ranks as one of the finest of its kind ever produced. Morison's hand is very apparent in several aspects of its layout and design".] A presentation copy, inscribed and signed by Francis Meynell the typographer of the Pelican Press to W. A. Webb. Covers rubbed, spine-label darkened, contents slightly agetoned, Good. Seller Inventory # ABE-57243
