About this Item
Approximately 312 programmes in 14 notebooks, mostly stapled in, some loose. Including: English, French and Spanish examples, a fairly even mix of Theatre, Ballet and Opera, with a little strip-tease, cabaret and bullfighting. Including many of the big hits of the period such as Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman and A Streetcar Named Desire, but of more interest for the minor and rarer items, notably a programme for a 1946 performance of Patrick Hamilton's 'The Governess'. The first 9 notebooks are signed by Haskell to the upper cover, Vol 1 contains some handwritten notes regarding the performance dates, two programmes have been signed by some of the performers and there are occasional minor annotations by Haskell. The notebooks are for the most part frequently perused but robust enough, a few have been read more vigorously or contain heavier programmes and are beginning to fragment, the pages are somewhat toned, marked and musty, Vol 10's pages have considerable insect damage, fortunately confined to the actual notepaper, the insects in question seemingly finding the glossier, better paper of the programmes unpleasant to the palate, the staples have rusted and caused staining to the paper. Haskell became one of the most celebrated art historians of his generation, and this collection shows his formative interests, covering the end of his time at Eton, his service in the RAEC and his time at King's College, Cambridge.
