Arthur Lestrade y rassemble les souvenirs et observations issus de sa longue présence dans le pays, où il exerça notamment des activités missionnaires, artisanales et éducatives. Son intérêt pour la population, les coutumes, la nature et les réalités locales donne à son récit une dimension à la fois autobiographique, ethnographique et historique. L'ouvrage permet ainsi de découvrir le Rwanda à travers le regard d'un témoin ayant vécu de nombreuses années au contact de la société rwandaise. Il intéressera particulièrement les lecteurs passionnés par l'histoire du Rwanda, l'Afrique centrale, les missions protestantes et l'histoire coloniale belge. La bibliographie consacrée au Rwanda répertorie l'ouvrage parmi les travaux d'Arthur Lestrade et confirme sa publication à Bruxelles en 1978. Arthur Lestrade (1897-1990) fut un missionnaire protestant belge, artisan, éducateur et observateur passionné de la nature. Arrivé au Rwanda en 1921, il y passa plusieurs décennies et participa notamment au développement des missions protestantes de Rubengera et de Kirinda. Il s'intéressa également à la faune, à la flore et aux réalités ethnographiques du pays et publia plusieurs travaux sur ces sujets.
