The author provides a detailed look at some of the decomposition products of proteid bodies and digestive products, and also explores the chemical alterations that accompany morphological changes in nerve cells. The book is positioned within the context of the history of the scientific method as applied to the field of medicine. It follows the evolution of scientific method in medicine from the time of Liebig, who held that all changes going on in the animal body are those of oxidation, to the present day, where we now know that oxidation is not always the case. The book discusses in depth the chemical activity of the living cell, which can be perverted under abnormal conditions. The author maintains that the most potent bacterial poisons belong to the proteids, and that all pathogenic germs induce their characteristic effects by virtue of chemical poisons which the micro-organisms elaborate. The author's conclusion is that the insights offered regarding the chemistry of the animal cell will lead to a better and more scientific understanding of tissue metabolism, which in turn will lead to more rational therapeutics.
