Mme de Girardin est née en 1804 et morte en 1855 Jeune fille, elle a vu le règne de Louis XVIII, celui de Charles X; elle a assisté au réveil brillant de la vie de so ciété que favorisait la Restauration; en même temps, amie des poètes, poète elle-meme, elle a joué un noble rôle dans la renaissance littéraire qui s'est produite' aux en viroris de 1820. Recherchée dans les salons pour Son talent et sa beauté, louée par les jeunes gens enthousiastes qui méditaient une poésie nouvelle elle s'est assoc1ee à tout ce qu'il y avait de plus délicat et de plus généreux dans la société de son temps.
En 1831, elle quitte son nom de jeune fille: Delphine Gay, qu 'elle a rendu célèbre; elle épouse M. De Girardin. Une nouvelle phase s'ouvre dans sa vie,-et aussi dans la vie du 51ecle. Sous la monarchie de Juillet, la fermentation poétique et chevaleresque des années précédentes décroît promptement, les sentiments baissent.
