Synopsis

In this early 20th-century novel, the author shares their observations on the profound social changes underway during a period of rapid technological advancements. The young protagonist, Sébastien Réal, is a university-educated bourgeois who has experienced a sudden reversal of fortune. Sébastien's journey to Paris marks the beginning of a quest to re-establish himself and find his place in a society he no longer recognizes. Along the way, Sébastien encounters a diverse cast of characters who represent the social and intellectual landscape of this time, including a deputy, a banker, and a professor who all fail to provide him with the opportunities he seeks. Sébastien's story encapsulates the experience of those uprooted by societal upheaval and serves as a study of the individual's struggle to maintain character in the face of adversity.
