The establishment of kingly rule was undoubtedly a part Of the Divine purpose, and as such was looked forward to in the Book of Deuteronomy (ch. 17. 14 It was, indeed, an essential part of the preparation for the kingdom of the Messiah; and in lower matters it gave the Israelites greater national security and more rapid progress in civilization than they had ever enjoyed before. Without the kingdom they could scarcely have worked out the purpose for which they were called into being.
