Excerpt from Forest and Range Fire Problems of the Missouri Ozarks
Missouri's million acres of forest are producing only one-fifth to one-third of their potential because of frequent forest and range fires and other misuses. These forests are one of the State's most important renewable resources. They occupy more land area than any other crop. Moreover, about 80 percent of the forest million acres) lies in the rough Ozark Region where most of the land is better suited to forests than any other crop.
About two - thirds of the lumber used in Missouri is imported, and yet people must continually migrate from the forested region to find employment. If forests are to contribute their proper share to the economy of the area, it is necessary to stop the misuses and improve the management of forests and utilization of forest products. Adequate protection from fire is the first step.
