Quand, sur le conseil de M. Gaston Migeon, notre maître, nous avons entre pris d'étudier cet artiste, nous avons essayé de combler les lacunes qui restaient encore dans sa biographie; nous avons consulté les grandes séries des Archives nationales les contestations entre les maîtres, les sentences de police, les commissaires au Châtelet, ainsi que les archives notariales, qui con tiennent de si précieux renseignements. Malheureusement les archives de la mai son d'orléans ne sont pas accessibles au public; il en existe peu de pièces aux Archives nationales ou dans différentes bibliothèques. Toutes ces recherches ont été longues, mais elles nous ont été facili tées par l'aimable accueil et les bons con seils que nous avons trouvés partout et nous pouvons dire qu'il ne nous a fallu qu'un peu de patience pour les poursuivre jusqu'au bout.
