Synopsis
This book delves into the intricacies of the ancient Mexican calendar system, a complex and fascinating subject that has intrigued scholars for centuries. The author embarks on a meticulous exploration of the calendar's structure, its underlying principles, and its profound connection to the religious and social fabric of Mesoamerican society. The author challenges existing interpretations of the calendar, particularly regarding the commencement of the year and the relationship between the solar year and the ritual year of 260 days. Through a meticulous analysis of historical documents, codices, and astronomical data, the author proposes a novel understanding of the calendar's dual nature, encompassing both a civil and a religious dimension. Central to the book's argument is the concept of "concordant numeration," a fundamental principle that governs the harmonious interplay between day signs, numerals, and year symbols. The author demonstrates how this principle ensures a methodical and cyclical progression of the calendar, revealing the remarkable sophistication of ancient Mexican timekeeping. By shedding light on the intricate workings of the ancient Mexican calendar system, this book offers invaluable insights into the cosmological beliefs, societal structures, and intellectual achievements of Mesoamerican civilizations.
